Distinguished and Famous people from Warrnambool

🧵 Sir Fletcher Jones

Fletcher Jones began selling textiles at Warrnambool in 1924 and developed a clothing business that became a major local employer. The purpose-built Pleasant Hill factory, established in the late 1940s, allowed a growing workforce to participate in ownership and profits. Its gardens and silver water tower also became familiar town landmarks. The business eventually spread through shops and factories beyond Warrnambool, but the local connection remained unusually strong through the many families who worked there. Surviving staff stories preserve the everyday experience behind a company remembered for both its trousers and its approach to employment.

🎵 Shane Howard

Shane Howard grew up beside the Merri River at Dennington, on Warrnambool's outskirts, before becoming a founding member of Goanna. The band's Spirit of Place album and the song Solid Rock reached a wide audience, bringing questions of land and Aboriginal injustice into popular music. His songwriting also supported the campaign to protect Tasmania's Franklin River through Let the Franklin Flow. A later solo career continued the connection between music, place and social concerns. The river landscape and family background of his south-west Victorian childhood form an enduring setting behind that work.

⛳ Marc Leishman

Marc Leishman won Warrnambool Golf Club's championship at thirteen while playing in the same group as his father. It was an early sign of the ability that later carried him into professional golf and multiple PGA Tour victories. His sporting interests were wider than the fairway: cricket, surfing and Australian rules football also featured in his life. After his wife Audrey's serious illness in 2015, the couple established the Begin Again Foundation to help families facing medical and life crises. The local club championship remains a particularly vivid starting point for a career played across the world.
